Portsmouth players to be paid at last

Portsmouth s players were due to be paid their December wages on Thursday after squad salaries at the English Premier League crisis club had been delayed for the third time this season.

As far as I am aware, everything is going through to their accounts today, Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie told Sky Sports on Thursday.

Payment should be there, I am pleased to say. Obviously it is not the best scenario in the world to have this situation happening but obviously finance is a major problem in the world market at the moment.

He added: I am told funds were received this morning so therefore it s a question of the process, and however long that takes to go through, but I m told it should all happen today.

Sneijder: Money was never an issue

Wesley Sneijder insisted money was never his motivation after his contract negotiations with Galatasaray ended successfully.

The Turkish champions announced on Saturday that they had tied the Dutch playmaker down to a new contract that will keep him at the Turk Telekom Arena until 2018.

Sneijder, 31, had been linked with a move away from Gala at points during last season, particularly when he went two months without receiving his wages.

But that matter was resolved and Sneijder spoke of his happiness in Istanbul at a press conference to formally confirm the contract renewal.

I am really happy and I feel really comfortable here, said Sneijder. My wife loves the city and club my new baby will be born here.

I never had doubts about the contract…

Guardiola doesn´t communicate – Benatia

Juventus defender Medhi Benatia has explained why he believes Pep Guardiola does not communicate well with his players.

The Morocco international joined Guardiola s Bayern Munich from Roma in 2014 and won two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal before moving to Juve on loan in August.

Benatia revealed Guardiola and Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri place similar tactical demands on their players, but he claims that the Manchester City manager is more distant with his squad as a result of some negative experiences during his resoundingly successful four-year spell in charge of Barcelona.

They want you to play, be aggressive, to have the ball, Benatia told La Gazzetta dello Sport.  Temperamentally, they are different: Allegri is closer to the players, Guardiola do…

Martinez leaves Lukaku out of Belgium squad but expects swift Inter return

Roberto Martinez expects Romelu Lukaku to return to Inter training in the next week, but has left him out of Belgium s squad for their upcoming Nations League games as a precaution.

Lukaku sustained a thigh injury in training at the end of last month, causing him to miss a derby defeat to Milan and Champions League fixtures against Bayern Munich and Viktoria Plzen.

The striker, who is Belgium s record goalscorer with 68 goals in 102 senior caps, also appears doubtful for the Nerazzurri s Serie A tussle with Udinese on Sunday, prompting Martinez to act with caution when selecting his squad for games against Wales and the Netherlands.

Romelu is making good progress, his recovery is going in the right direction, Martinez said.

He will probably return to…

Napoli v Lazio: Benitez to use attacking approach

Napoli coach Rafael Benitez insists his side will not sit back in the second leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final with Lazio on Wednesday despite holding the advantage of an away goal.

Benitez s men claimed a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Rome last month, Manolo Gabbiadini s second-half equaliser to Mirsolav Klose s opener giving them a slender advantage ahead of the decisive encounter at the Stadio San Paolo.

But the Spaniard, who guided Napoli to their fifth Coppa success last year with a 3-1 victory over Fiorentina in last year s final at the Stadio Olimpico, is keen for his players to attack as they bid to secure a return to the showpiece at the same venue.

We ll go out onto the pitch with the idea of winning the game,  Benitez said.

Martinez back in Bayern training

Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez resumed full training on Wednesday for the first time since rupturing cruciate ligaments in August.

The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder sustained the injury to his left knee during the German Super Cup defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

However, after surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation programme, the Spaniard trained on Wednesday and is hopeful of featuring before the end of the season.

It s just fantastic, I m overjoyed, the 26-year-old told Bayern s official website.

It s only the first step. I know I have a lot of work ahead of me yet.

They [Bayern team-mates] were cheering and clapping for me. I guess they re all delighted for me. I hope I can pick up a few minutes playing time very soon.

Real to return for Van de Beek

Real Madrid have informed Donny van de Beek of Ajax that they will return for him in the summer of 2020, according to .

Along with Christian Eriksen of Tottenham Hotspur, the 22-year-old was considered by Real as an alternative to Paul Pogba as their negotiations with Manchester United started to go badly. However, Real head coach Zinedine Zidane stepped in at the last moment to emphasize that Pogba, and no other player, was the missing piece of the puzzle for the team he s trying to build. Signing an alternative was put on hold and the window slammed shut.

However, in Madrid they apparently believe that another season with Ajax would be an excellent way for the young midfielder to further his development before arriving to the Santiago Bernabeu. The Dutch champions wer…

Messi tells Dembele to step up and be more professional at Barcelona

Lionel Messi has told Ousmane Dembele he needs to step up for Barcelona and be more professional.

Stories about Dembele s discipline, including time-keeping issues, have been a constant thread through the France forward s career to date.

His lack of development since swapping Borussia Dortmund for Camp Nou led to Dembele reportedly being offered to Paris Saint-Germain as a makeweight in a proposed deal for Neymar.

No transfer went through before the deadline at the start of September, however, with former Rennes starlet Dembele said to be reluctant to make the return to Ligue 1.

Barca captain Messi has made it clear more is expected of Dembele this term, although the 22-year-old scored eight LaLiga goals in 2018-19 when only starting 20 games.
